Bairnsdale Engineering:

Dairy Calf Sheds

A well-designed calf shed plays a critical role in raising healthy stock. Calves need a clean, dry, well-drained environment with good airflow, natural light, and protection from extreme weather conditions.

Bairnsdale Engineering’s ventilated calf sheds are designed to provide maximum shade during hot summer months while allowing plenty of sunlight to enter during winter. This helps create a comfortable environment for calves throughout the year.

With animal welfare at the forefront of our designs, we have developed a rear wall ventilation system that promotes continuous airflow through the shed. A ventilation gap beneath the overhanging eave on the prevailing weather side helps remove stale air while protecting bedding from wind-driven rain. The result is a drier, healthier environment for your calves.

Our calf shed frames are manufactured from heavy-duty universal beams, with connection plates factory-welded to rafters and columns for strength, durability, and efficient installation. For maximum longevity in demanding agricultural environments, we recommend hot-dipped galvanised columns for superior corrosion resistance.

Every farm operates differently, which is why our calf rearing sheds can be custom designed to suit your pen layout, stocking requirements, and site conditions. We’ll work with you to design a calf shed that provides the shelter, ventilation, and functionality to support a healthy future herd.

Client Outcome

A 21-metre-span multipurpose shed was custom-designed with calf health as a top priority. Ventilation solutions in the ridge and back wall ensured excellent airflow, while durable concrete panels simplifed cleaning and helped improve biosecurity. The project also features our innovative Performaflow® Gutter system, reducing downpipes and onsite plumbing for a clean, efficient result.

No regrets! The ventilation gaps and the steeper roof pitch work really well. Have had the calves in the shed for 10 weeks now, and there is no smell. I was wary about rain coming in the ridge vent, but it was pouring down the other day, and it was completely dry inside. Very happy calves!
