Dairy Feed Pad Cover
Built to suit the slope of the ground, this feed pad cover at Mount Lyall Farms in South Gippsland is a prime example of the custom-built designs that Bairnsdale Engineering is capable of.
Chris saw an immediate return on his investment after he installed a cover over his feed pad area. Designed so that the cows come straight from being milked in the dairy to the feed lot before heading back to the paddock or loafing barn has saved Chris acres of silage from being pugged.
This feed pad cover is 103m long: 11x 9m bays + 2m overhangs to the ends and 21m wide: 16m span + 2.5m overhang each side.
The front columns are made of Circular Hollow Section (CHS). This eliminated the need of wall bracing in the area of high stock traffic allowing for much greater access to the feed troughs and ease of movement through the feed lot. Being a round column also help prevents bruising to stock that do rub against the post as opposed to a column with sharp edges.
The back columns are made from Universal Beams (UB) simplifying the installation of the concrete panels on the back wall.

CHS front columns eliminated the need for wall bracing, offering uninterrupted access to the feed troughs. They also prevent bruising in stock as they rub against the post.
Universal Beam Rafters
The clean, straight lines of the UB rafters offer less bird roosting opportunities while creating maximum height clearance for feed wagons.
Roof Overhangs
Purlins and rafters overhang offering additional weather protection, helping to maintain feed quality.
I drive past farms where I see feed strewn out in the paddock, much of which is wasted and trodden into the paddock. The feed pad cover has eliminated most of the feed waste.
